Host Families

We believe that a successful placement begins with the careful screening of each au pair applicant. That's why we've established our extensive network of local interviewers throughout the world.

Under the direction of the Director of International Relations, our International Representatives personally interview and screen each au pair applicant. Their references are checked as well as their English proficiency, their health status and their educational background. Of the thousands of program applicants, we select only those in whom we have complete confidence.

Once you have been accepted as a Host Family, you will work closely with a placement coordinator in our main office. Through attention to detail and responsiveness to your needs, your placement coordinator will work with you in selecting the au pair that is right for your family. The placement coordinator will select several au pairs that meet your requirements and present to you their files.

Included in each file is a complete application with an essay describing the au pair's interests, background, family life, reference reports, letters of recommendation, family photos, a physician's report and copies of all degrees and diplomas earned. After you have reviewed the files, contact the au pairs you are interested in learning more about and determine which au pair is best suited for your family.

Unlike most au pair programs, the selection of your au pair is always left to you. You may review as many files as necessary.

Once you have selected an au pair and she has accepted your position, a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa will be issued and travel arrangements will be made from her home country to your community.

Upon her arrival in the United States, your au pair will participate in an orientation program designed to facilitate a successful adjustment to American culture. The orientation will prepare her for the differences she is likely to encounter from her native culture, and provide her with a better understanding of her new surroundings.

Her Local Area Representative (LAR) will welcome her to the area and schedule an initial visit. The LAR in your area will be in close contact with your au pair to help her adjust to her new environment and to provide her with support, supervision and counsel. You may contact the LAR at any time to discuss your concerns or comments regarding the placement.

Throughout the year, your au pair will participate in activities and seminars under the direction of her LAR. She will also receive periodic training and orientation literature from our main office.

Living with someone of another culture and background will take some getting used to, for both you and your au pair, but with flexibility and understanding, it can be a wonderfully enriching experience for everyone. Friendships will be formed that will continue long after your international visitor returns to her home country.

Hosting an au pair through goAUPAIRĀ® means exceptional in-home childcare. But it's much more than that. Your au pair will introduce your family to so many cultural and educational opportunities. Her presence in your home will enrich your lives, and allow you the opportunity to share with her the customs and traditions of America.

When the year draws to a close, your children will have a better understanding of the world they live in, and fond memories of a special friend. Your au pair will return to her home country with new appreciation of American culture, and a place in her heart for her American family.
